Young Boys v Basel - Super League

Young Boys are virtually at full strength as there are no injuries among their squad. Their transfer policy was very smart during the summer. Adi Hütter has the ability to choose between two very strong players in almost each playing position. Return of their key player Hoarau from a long term injury should boost their chances of a win. This is a big derby between two strong rivals and the only two serious title challengers. Considering the fact that this is the season opener, they are playing at home and team didn’t have too many important changes so far in the summer, Young Boys might have a slight advantage to end as winners here. There is a very good price to back them as they’ll look to make strong pressure on title holders. As usual, their games should be competitive but mostly goal oriented. In this early phase of the competition, clubs may show some defensive vulnerability as their legs are hard while also the implementation of new tactical approaches are not going to run very smoothly. There should be more than 3 goals in this game so the 3 line seems very achievable.

Basel are going to miss only youngster Manzambi and that is the reason why their sporting director Streller has praised his medical team. There is only one open question for new manager Wicky and it has been connected with the tactical approach. 4-2-3-1 suits them most but 3-1-4-2 should allow them to play more attractive football which has been demanded from Wicky. There are a couple of new things at Basel such as change of manager, leading structures in the club and sporting vision which has now been totally focused on promoting young Swiss players. All these are going to be very hard to achieve, especially as competition demands remain the same. The team is capable of earning all three points here but following all these changes it would be good to skip them here. Basel are going to try to play much more attractive football this season and considering their last season records, goals should come in numbers again. The majority of their matches in recent periods ended with 3 or more goals scored. Against an attack-minded opponent, they’ll try to cancel each other out with effective performance. Even if behind, they can overturn it so more than 3 goals are likely.

Verdict & Prediction

This season opener couldn’t come at a better time for the hosts, who thrashed Benfica 5-1 in their final friendly game. They are at full strength and will face their biggest title rivals Basel at home where they’ll have massive support from the stands. Young Boys will be fully motivated to open the season a with a positive result. Three points will be targeted though it would be essential to avoid defeat as that would see them already behind Basel, which may interrupt their confidence ahead of the new campaign. The host are considered a title candidate though the media are not giving them much chance to stay in the race for long.
