The 5th round of A-League will serve us with a match between Adelaide United and Wellington Phoenix, which will take place at Wellington Regional Stadium, home of the Phoenix.
The home side, Wellington Phoenix are coming into this match after 2 consecutive losses. They failed to win against WS Wanderers (0:3) and Melbourne City (2:0). Phoenix started the season well, with a win and a draw, however, these 2 consecutive defeats saw them falling to 8th place in the league. Looking at their most recent match, on 9th November, Phoenix lost against Melbourne City at AAMI Park. The scoring started only 8 minutes in when De Laet scored a nice long-range goal which gave Melbourne City an early lead. Further, into the 1st half, it was Melbourne City, who had the most possession of the ball and with that 4x as much attempts on goal (8). Wellington had a great chance in 28′ when they were given a free kick just outside the penalty box, but the shot was denied by Galekovic. Despite a total of 10 goal attempts from both teams in the first 45 minutes, the only goal we saw in the 1st half came in 9′. Going into the 2nd half, Wellington performed better, managing to have the ball at their feet for 51% of the half. Still, it was Melbourne City who continued with their attacks (6 attempts on the goal), whereas Wellington only managed to create 3 opportunities. This resulted in Melbourne scoring their 2nd goal in 59′ with an excellent shot from Fornaroli. The match ended with Melbourne City celebrating their 2nd win of the season and Wellington Phoenix losing their 2nd in a row. Final score 2:0.
The visiting team, Adelaide United have lost their most recent match against Perth Glory (0:2), which was their 1st defeat in the season. Up until now, their overall record stands at 1-2-1, which puts them at the 5th spot in A-League. In the match, Perth Glory were extremely close to scoring an opener in 12′, when Chianese hit the crossbar after being left alone in front of Adelaide goalkeeper. Only 4 minutes after, it was Adelaide who were close to scoring a goal after a mistake from Perth goalkeeper, but the opportunity was not converted into a goal. With that, we did not see a goal in the 1st half despite a total of 11 goal attempts from both teams. Going into the 2nd half, Adelaide was once again close to scoring a goal in 54′, but the shot went wide. The opening goal came in 73′ when Keogh scored a goal from a deflected pass, which put Perth into a lead. Adelaide pushed for a goal in the next couple of minutes, but it backfired when Perth scored another goal from the counter-attack, which put them into a 0:2 lead and sealed the deal. Final score 0:2.
Wellington Phoenix did not convince me in their previous match, as they really never had a chance to defeat City with performances shown. In total, they managed only 5 shots in 90 minutes and with such a low number of opportunities, you simply can’t expect to win. On the other side, Adelaide had a better chance to win against Perth Glory, as they had 61% possession! Still, they were unable to convert that into a goal. It was a disappointing result for Adelaide and they will be eager to bounce back with a win in the upcoming match. In fact, I see no reason for them not to be able to defeat Wellington. From what we have seen from these two teams, Adelaide is clearly a better side. They have drawn against Sydney FC (1:1) and Newcastle Jets (1:1), in addition, they completely dominated Central Coast Mariners (0:3) and won the cup finals in matches prior to the defeat against Perth. On the other side, Wellington Phoenix doesn’t have much to show, with their best result coming from an opening match when they won against Newcastle Jets (2:1). Expect Adelaide to win this one and bounce back from their recent defeat against Perth Glory.
