Watford face the prospect of being under strength in defense again as Prodl is a major doubt, while Britos and Kaboul are already out, leaving Cathcart and Mariappa as the two centre backs, the latter being the fifth choice. Behrami is another doubt and is only likely to make the bench Doucoure continuing in his place. Deeney and Capoue should start in positive changes from the last match. They don’t have a lot to play for aside from a top ten finish, but they will be looking to bounce back from a poor showing and defeat last time out. They’ve won their last two at home and will be feeling good about a third against a struggling Swansea, but a draw isn’t a total disaster, even if at home three points is the only result that really pleases, having been strong of late. They aren’t an attacking team by nature, so their approach will be direct and balanced, looking to hit Swansea with a physical approach. Scoring first allows them to sit in and play on the break, being content to sit on a single goal lead. They aren’t free scoring but will fancy their chances of breaking down Swansea at least once, giving them a very good chance of taking a positive result.
Swansea have been dealt a blow with the loss of midfield anchorman Cork to injury, which leaves them under-strength in the center of the pitch. Sung-Yeung Ki is the most likely replacement, though a change of shape has also been touted, but being in relegation trouble it’s a big gamble to alter system and is less likely. Llorente and Narsingh are expected to start, replacing Ayew and Routledge. They are in a bad patch of form, but Paul Clement will be demanding a reaction from his squad after a poor showing at West Ham last time out. They’ll see Watford as beatable, but need to be able to compete physically as well as technically. A draw isn’t the worst result but they do have the quality to win if they play to potential, however establishing balance and risk will be key to a result. They’ll feel they can cause Watford problems, particularly with Llorente coming back into the team, providing a more direct outlet. If they fell behind the team could become a little anxious, and they’d have to open up and take risks. They aren’t solid defensively, making a single goal lead very vulnerable, so they will likely need two goals to win, which is something that is within their powers.
Verdict & Prediction
Despite a humbling loss at Tottenham last time out with a depleted squad, position, but at home, there will still be incentive to bounce back with a win. Against Swansea, they’d be a little bit disappointed not to come away with three points, but they don’t have the same desperation for points that their visitors have, which could be telling. They’ll be motivated to put on a good showing for their home fans, but a draw isn’t a disaster at all.
