Swansea are hoping that Llorente can pass fit enough to play some part from the bench, but he won’t be ready to start the game, which is a big attacking blow. They are close to full strength in other areas, just Routledge a first team doubt due to personal reasons. Paul Clement is going to consider changes from the last game but can’t afford to make too many or the strength of the team drops. They are very much in the relegation fight and though they are at home and in good form in front of their own fans, they’d be happy to take a point from this game, knowing Tottenham’s strengths and their own motivation. They’ll believe a win is possible but they’d need a bit of luck to get three points, so they’ll set up to be as organized as possible before hitting on the break when they can. With the league’s worst defense, they’ll struggle to keep a clean sheet against Tottenham, so they have to pose some form of the threat going forward, but doing so without leaving themselves exposed is the real task. If they fall behind they need to maintain their shape or risk being heavily beaten. To get a win they’ll likely need to score first, but even that is unlikely to be enough at present.
Tottenham will make a few changes from their weekend win over Burnley as Winks is forced to drop out by injury, replaced by Dembele in a positive switch, while Walker and Heung-Min Son return to the line-up in strong tactical changes. Wanyama is a slight doubt but should be fine, however Kane, Rose and Lamela all remain out to pre-existing injuries that leave the team weaker. With results going their way at the weekend, Tottenham will sense an opportunity to get right back in the title race here, particularly with Chelsea playing Man City. Anything but three points would be viewed as a terrible result and could damage the mood in the camp. The form is excellent and they’ll travel to Swansea as favorites, which will be emphasized with a fairly attacking approach. They’ll fancy their chances of breaking down the league’s worst defense, even without key striker Kane, so if the goals don’t come early they won’t panic, though as time wears on they will commit more men forward. They’ll continue looking for goals even if ahead and do have a real quality edge over their hosts, so should they fall behind they’d still believe a win was possible.
Verdict & Prediction
Tottenham will feel they are right back in the title race after results went their way at the weekend. They have a small cushion to Liverpool in third and will be desperate to pressure Chelsea at the top, so will travel to Swansea with only three points in mind as an acceptable outcome. They’ll really believe Swansea are beatable and will be fully motivated and confident after a run of four straight wins in the league. They have a lot to play for in the season run in so though their hosts are scrapping for points at the bottom, a win is just as important for Tottenham.
