A cross Conference match-up with Los Angeles Lakers against Detroit Pistons will be held at Staples Center, Los Angeles.
Los Angeles Lakers are currently at poor 13th position in the West, with a record of 15-29. It’s not a great sight to be fair, and by looking at their recent performances, they will sadly not be moving up the table anytime soon. At the moment they are on a 3 game losing streak, with Trail Blazers (87:108), Spurs (134:94) and Clippers (113:97) all proven to be much too strong for Lakers. On the positive note, Lakers did win against Heat (127:100) and Magic (111:95), thus holding a 2-3 record in the past 5 games. The recent match against Clippers started with Clippers leading by 11 points by the end of 1st quarter, to which they added another 8 points before going into half time. The lead of 19 points is more than enough to secure a win and that’s exactly what happened. Clippers held off Lakers attack in the next 2 quarters (26:29), (29:29) and went on to win their 6th game in a row. Lakers shot 44.4% from the field, with 14 turnovers and 3 steals, Clippers on the other hand had a 52.2% accuracy from the field with 7 turnovers and 6 steals. Top scorers; Jordan (24pts), Clarkson (21pts) and Paul (20pts).
Now let’s take a look at the Pistons. Detroit Pistons are not enjoying any better form in recent matches. In fact they have got the same record as Lakers (3-2) with 3 consecutive defeats prior to tonight’s match. They lost to Kings (100:94), GSW (127:107) and Jazz (110:77). On the other side Detroit had 2 close victories against Hornets (115:114) and Trail Blazers (124:125) in OT. Looking at the match against Jazz, it’s no surprise to me that Pistons failed to win, but losing by 33 points is something else. The match started with a low scoring 1st quarter (14:19) . Pistons headed into 2nd quarter with 5 point lead, which was soon closed by a good showing from Jazz (31:24). 2 point lead of Jazz at the end of 1st half did not mean a lot so in that perspective, the match could still go both ways. This statement was soon proven to be wrong with Jazz outscoring Pistons by 13 points in 3rd quarter and another 18 points in 4th with 62.5% shooting accuracy. Statistics show that Pistons shot 39.5% from the field with 13 turnovers and 5 steals. Their opponents, Utah Jazz shot much better, with 53.8% FG, they also committed 12 turnovers and got 10 steals. Top scorers; Hood (27pts), Hill (22pts) and Hayward (20pts).
Verdict & Prediction
As mentioned before, neither of the teams are shining as of now, both had some tough opponents in recent games and the record clearly shows that. But in my eyes Lakers were playing better, despite losing the same amount of games as Pistons. In addition, historically Lakers are a much better opponent when it comes to playing at Staples Center, winning all of the last 6 encounters with Detroit Pistons. If that is not enough, we will not see Caldwell-Pope today which will even further weaken the Pistons. The decision is clear for me. Lakers with +1.
Prediction: Los Angeles Lakers +1.5 points
Odds: 1.92 Pinnacle
