GENT v WOLFSBURG – Champions League
Februar 17 2016, Ghelamco Arena, 19:45 GMT+0
When you look at those two names it all seems as a Belgian team has no chance against the mighty Bundesliga team, but is that thinking correct?
Well first we need to take a look at the Wolves form this year, and it’s quite frankly terrible as far as away matches are the topic. In 10 matches Wolfsburg won only 1 with only scoring 6 goals on the road and conceding 19. The only reason they are still at the top half of the Bundesliga are home matches.
But today the German side won’t play at Volkswagen Arena, but much less welcoming Ghelamco Arena. In Ghent, the Belgians are still holding a very respective record of 0 losses in the group stage of Champions League and even managed to draw against Lyon (1:1) with only 9 men. In theory domestic league the “Buffalos” only lost 1 match out of 13, and even managed to beat Anderlecht (2:0) and Club Brugge (4:1), which are both high profile teams. If those facts don’t tell the visiting team they won’t have a good time in Ghent, I do not know what does.
As for missing players, the German side will miss their first goalkeeper Diego Benaglio due to injury and suspended Naldo, as well as Daniel Caliguiri, leading top scorer Bas Dost and Carlos Ascues, who is still injured.
For the home side only long term injured Hannes Van der Bruggen and Gustav Wikheim are missing. Other than that the Buffalos are ready to go.
So on one side we have an underrated Gent, who has proven he can defend their home stadium even on international level, and weakened German side who might be slightly overrated due the fact they play in a strong league. I believe Gent has a good chance to win this one and get themselves an advantage before visiting Germany in the second leg.
Prediction: Gent +0
Odds: 2.31 Pinnacle
