FORMULA 1 – CHINESE GRAND PRIX 2016 Betting Preview + Prediction
April 17 2016, Shanghai International Circuit, 6:00 GMT +0

Nico Rosberg heading to hat-trick and Hamilton with five-place grid penalty are 2 sentences describing the upcoming Grand Prix in China.

Formula 1 continues its tour around Asia and Oceania this weekend, with its 3rd stop being Shanghai, where the 13th Chinese Grand Prix will be held. Shanghai International Circuit was designed as a modern track, with stunning architecture and it was China’s gateway to the world of Formula 1 racing since 2004, when it debuted.

The 5.4 kilometre long track is shaped as Chinese character “Shang”, which stands for “high” or “above”. There are many symbols represented in the architecture, from Chinese history, buildings arranged like pavilions to represent ancient Yuyan-Garden in Shanghai, nature and technology are carefully used to create the harmony between the elements etc. Anyway it’s still a challenging track for drivers, with high-speed straights and it demands change of acceleration and deceleration within winding turns. That gives the drivers a lot of opportunities for overtaking and a intense and exciting experience for spectators to watch.

Nico Rosberg is a rising star this season, after wining 2 back to back races in Melbourne and Bahrain, starting his season in the best possible way and claiming top spot in the Drivers Championship standings. This Sunday, the German driver seeks his 3rd win in a row to get his hat-trick. Nico is familiar with Chinese Grand Prix, winning it back in 2012. The momentum in on his side and with 5 place grid penalty given to his team mate Lewis Hamilton (because he changed his gearbox following the race in Bahrain) it’s only good news for Rosberg, who is a clear favourite. The bookmakers think the same, as Rosberg is odds-on favourite to win in China. Despite Hamilton being given the penalty, Nico still respects his driving skills and has said: “Even Lewis, with a five-place grid penalty is going to be a big threat. How many times has he shown last year, that when he starts ninth or whatever he is straight up to third? So definitely I am remaining fully focused, I’m  fighting for the win definitely, but it won’t be an easy one for sure.”

Hamilton will for sure try to win this race and stop Rosberg’s great run, so he can increase the chances of him winning the title. Interesting fact is that Lewis Hamilton has won this race in each of the past two seasons and Nico Rosberg is well aware of that. In addition Lewis is the most successful driver in Chinese Grand Prix history, with 4 wins in Shanghai. Hamilton is optimistic going into this race, despite being given the penalty. He said to Sky Sports: ” It has been a good track to me for many years so I feel good coming here” “Naturally when you arrive in Shanghai and find out you’re already going to be starting five places behind wherever I qualify is a kick in the goonies, but you just take it. Challenge is another opportunity to arise, rather than looking at the glass half empty, look at it half full.”

From his interview it’s clear that Hamilton is confident he can win this one, but I find Rosberg the man to follow. The German driver is in great form, looking how he finished 2015 season and his performances in this season,  I see no reason why he wouldn’t continue his great run and he will surely be a dominant force in this years’ campaign.

For an additional tip I decided to take a look at Kevin Magnussen, and I predict him to finish in the points. The Dane was in 12th and 11th place in first 2 races. The reason I believe he can do better is, that he has had some issues on both of the occasions. In Melbourne he suffered a puncture during the first lap, and in Bahrain he was forced to start from the pit lane after missing the weight bridge at practice. If he manages to have a “problem-free” race in Sunday I see no reason why he cant get his points by finishing in the top 10.

Prediction 1: Nico Rosberg to win
Odds: 2.00 Betfair

Prediction 2: Kevin Magnussen to finish top 10 / Points Finish
Odds: 10.00 Various
