Dundee are boosted by the return of midfielder McGowan, who missed last weekend’s 2-1 defeat to Celtic due to suspension. He should come straight back into the team at the expense of Williams, with O’Hara also in contention following a lengthy injury lay-off, noticeably improving the team with Vincent dropping out. Defender McPake and midfielder Low remain out injured. Dundee would probably settle for a point against Hearts, but may feel they’re capable of more against a side seemingly in transition since changing their manager. Dundee missed some late chances last time out against Celtic so must be more clinical in front of goal, with this being a major problem for them for most of the season so far. They will make attacking changes if chasing the game late on.
Hearts have an injury doubt over midfielder Buaben who came into the side last weekend against Partick before picking up a calf injury. If he was to fail to recover there could be a return for Muirhead out wide, which would be a more attacking change. Despite a disappointing result and performance at the weekend, there may not be many changes, with many of the options on the bench out of form. New Hearts boss Ian Cathro is already feeling the pressure just two games into his reign. The team were booed off at home last weekend after drawing 1-1 with Partick and some of his substitutions didn’t please the home support. This game will be seen as must-win by their demanding fans, but given the period of transition at the club at present, a draw may be acceptable to management and players.
Verdict & Prediction
Dundee played well in stages against Celtic at the weekend and caused them some late concerns, despite going down 2-1. They will take heart from that performance and look to put in a similarly committed display against Hearts, where they will expect to earn a positive result. Dundee would be happy to take a point from the visit of Hearts, but due to their opponents struggling in recent weeks since the change in manager they may feel the match comes at a good time and they could snatch a win. With most players available for selection, Dundee are in decent spirits.
