BARCLAYS PREMIER LEAGUE – ROUND 21 REVIEW

BARCLAYS PREMIER LEAGUE – ROUND 21

“Liverpool last minute goal”, “Leicester back on top” and “red card to help Sunderland” can all describe 21th round Barclays Premier League.

Let’s start with dramatic game between Arsenal and Liverpool. This game took place on January 13 at Anfield stadium and it was a real treat for all footbal fans. The 1st half gave us plenty to see, Firmino R. opened the scoring with a early goal for Liverpool and added another one to his name 9 minutes later, at 19th minute and now has 3 goals in his career at Liverpool. The visitors answered right after 1st goal from Liverpool with one of their own, Ramsey scored a equaliser 4 minutes after his team falling behind. And to finish off the 1st 45 minutes Giroud scored from a corner kick, so both of the teams went to second half leveled.
Only 10 minutes after 2nd half started Giroud showed us why he is leading in goals at Arsenal and scored another goal, to put his team into the lead. It all seemed as Arsenal will strengthened its position at the top of the table, but Allen J. shattered Arsenals plans with 90th minute goal after a great pass from Benteke.
This was arguably one of the best performances from Liverpool this season and we might link that to their new coach Jőrgen Klopp.

On the other side of England Tottenham hosted Leicester at White Hart Lane. Leicester is a team that shook the world this season, as noone could predict that a team that was at 14th place last season would be standing at the top of the league. This was an important match for Leicester because they needed to win to stay at the top. It all seemed as Leicester won’t pull it through, with 32% ball posession and only 2 shots on goal it’s still unbeliveable that they managed to score in 83th minute. Because of that goal they are currently tied with Arsenal at the top spot of the league, and this should be a interesting race of who will end on the top at the end of the season.

Swansea has hosted a relegation zone team Sunderland. These two teams are not even close to real competitors for the top position in the league nor for the spot in european competitions, but that does not mean they can not put up a great performance. As the game started the odds were in Swansea favor, playing at home and guests missing a few of their players. But all that doubted Sunderland were shocked by a 3rd minute goal by Defoe J. after a terrible mistake of Swansea goalkeeper. We did not have to wait long for a equaiser, as Swansea were given a questionable penalty. Sigurdsson G. stepped up to take it and he scored. 15 minurs later the game changing moment came, as Naughton K. recieved well deserved red card and Swansea was 1 man down, even with only 10 players they managed to score another goal before going into the break. Second half started well for the visitors with a spectacular top right corner goal by van Aanholt P. and the teams were tied. But that was not enough for Sunderland, they wanted to use advantage of an extra player and get their 3 points which they desperately need if they want to get out of relegation zone. In 61 minute Defoe scored another one, adding to his 7th goal in this season and Sunderland was leading. Swansea was defending well but Defoe stepped up once again and sealed the deal with his hat-trick goal after great pass from van Aanholt. A spectacular match that ended in favor to underdogs. A mistake caused by Naughton in 37 minute that gave him a red card probably caused his team to loose this match, that could end in a very different way as it did.
All in all a great performance my Sunderland, who is slowly climbing out of relegation zone, and this win will surely give them confidence for upcoming matches.

Other than that we witnessed Chelsea drawing against West Brom and there is no sign for Chelsea to get back on track anytime soon. (2:2)
Manchester City were unable to beat Everton at home and are currently at 3rd place in the league, 3 points behind the league leaders (0:0)
Stoke gained a few spots in the league with a win against Norwich. (3:1)
Man Utd couldn’t defeat 19th placed Newcastle at St. James’ Park. (3:3)
Aston Villa finally won a game after 17 games against Crystal Palace. (1:0)
West Ham climbed to 5th place in the league, know as Europa league spot with a win against Bournemouth. (1:3)

This round was interesting for all EPL fans and we hope the next one will be at least as interesting as this one with games as we have seen this week.
