The 2017 NFL season finally starts on Thursday, when the defending Super Bowl LI champions New England Patriots play against the Kansas City Chiefs. There is a lot of hype surrounding the suggestion that the Patriots will go 16-0, but if you ask me this may not be the wisest bet to place, especially after Julian Edelman and Derek Rivers injuries and Rob Ninkovich’s unexpected retirement.
Hats off to the coach Bill Belichick, as his team managed at least 10 wins per season, for 14 straight seasons, including eight consecutive AFC East titles and seven Super Bowl appearances in 16 years. It is obvious that the Patriots would like to pull another 16-0 season for the history books like they did it 10 years ago. But as I mentioned before, it won’t be easy, especially if their 40 years old star quarterback Tom Brady suffers an injury. As far as the preseason goes, they recorded one win against Detroit Lions(28:30), while they lost to Jacksonville Jaguars(24:31), Houston Texans(27:23) and New York Giants(38:40).
The Kansas City Chiefs are coming off of an impressive season with 12 wins and only 4 defeats, enough for them to claim the first place in the AFC West for the ninth time. They ended their 2016 season after Pittsburgh Steelers defeated them in the playoffs game(quarterfinals) with the score of 18-16. It was quite a positive season for them, they showed they can compete with everybody and they should be quite positive going into the new season. Coach Andy Reid changed little in their team but he did let some notable names leave like Dontari Poe, Jeremy Maclin, Jaye Howard, and DJ Alexander. However, none of those players are irreplaceable. In the preseason, they managed to win against Cincinnati Bengals(12:30) and Tennessee Titans(30:6), while they lost to the San Francisco 49ers(17:27) and Seattle Seahawks(26:13).
Under coach Andy Reid, the Chiefs have won at least 11 games in three of their last four seasons, 11 wins in 2013 and 2015, 12 wins previous season and 9 wins in 2014. The current line at Pinnacle stands at 8.5, which is in my opinion too low. I recommend a bet on over.
Outright Prediction 1: Kansas City Chiefs to win the AFC West Division
Odds: 3.410 Pinnacle
Outright Prediction 2: Over 8.5 Regular Season Wins
Odds: 1.704 Pinnacle
There is not a lot of recent history between these two teams, as they will meet for the first time since New England defeated Kansas with a score of 27-20 in the AFC Divisional Playoffs on January 16, 2016 at Gillette Stadium. If we want to take a look at their last regular season meeting, we have to go way back to 2014, when Patriots were defeated in a Monday Night Football game played in Kansas City by the score of 41-14. Anyway, it is hard to go against the reigning Super Bowl champions playing their first game of the season at home. Kansas City will be playing for a win, but I am not sure if Alex Smith is good enough to break Patriots defense. With that in mind, plus home field advantage, I recommend a bet on the New England Patriots to win.
Prediction: New England Patriots -7.00 points
Odds: 1.73 Pinnacle, 1.71 5Dimes
